Problem Statement

In my endeavor to run a game of Anima Prime for the first time, I encountered some trouble trying to give a consistent, concise answer to the simple question of “so, what are the rules?”. The problem starts small, of course, with this line in APR: “I’ve also cut out most of the sections that would be the same as in the original[.]” Although it acknowledges being an incomplete playtest document, it doesn’t specify which sections are which. This makes neither document reliable as a source of truth. AP is partially obsolete, and while APR does specify what’s been obsoleted, it requires inference to pick out which rules are still relevant. On its own, this is a manageable amount of friction — but, naturally, I complicated matters for myself by looking into the possibility of running it in FoundryVTT.

The hacks applied in Anima Prime: REBOOT intrigue me, but even if I’d rather just use Resurgence’s base rules, I’d need to differentiate said hacks within the VTT. REBOOT’s only rules document of its own is its README, but it does reference some rules from unofficial Anima Prime 1.5 document. In the end, this means I’m working with four incomplete “sources of truth”. What to do?

Project “Patchwork”

I aim to normalize and patch together each of these incomplete documents into forms which exactly represent the sum of the rules they expect to be composed of without requiring external references. Time permitting, I’d also like to comprehensively present the variety of optional rules, as well as collect and discuss other hacks of the system.
